Continued shortages in permanent and temporary talent

The latest Markit/REC Report on Jobs – published on the 10th May provides the most comprehensive guide to the UK labour market, drawing on original survey data provided by recruitment consultancies and employers across the UK.  

Availability of permanent staff

The availability of permanent candidates fell again in April, marking 3 years of continuous decline in talent availability. Although remaining marked, the rate of deterioration eased to the slowest since January 2014, however this is still a strong indicator of external recruitment demand and significant shortages in the market of specific skills.
Permanent candidate availability fell across all four monitored English regions, with the sharpest decline (or demand) registered in the Midlands.

Availability of temp/contract staff

Temporary/contract staff availability continued to deteriorate in April. However, the latest reduction was the slowest since January 2014.
The Midlands posted the sharpest fall in temp availability (or demand), while the slowest reduction was signalled in London.
Overall clearly this indicates a consistent, but slowing demand for external talent across both temporary and permanent contractual circumstances with the Midlands showing the highest current levels of overall demand.
