Women in Manufacturing – A Case Study
During the North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness’s recent visit in collaboration with Husqvarna, we had the opportunity to cast the focus on some of the women within the manufacturing industry, on assignment at Husqvarna.
Rachel Johnson, Assembly Operator
“I wanted a change from running my own business. My dad worked at Husqvarna and highly recommended me to apply, since then, I’ve never looked back.
“Everyone deserves equal opportunities, no matter the gender. People tend to think you have to be big and strong to work in manufacturing, when you really just need to have the right attitude.
“My advice for women considering a future in manufacturing would be; go for it! There is nothing to be scared of. No one can tell you that you can’t do something.”
Jolene Barnes, Assembly Operator
“I wanted to do something new and the training made me realise there is nothing to be afraid of in manufacturing.
“It is important to have women in manufacturing as they can bring skills and knowledge to a workplace.
“My advice for women considering a future in manufacturing would be; although it may be new, there is nothing to be afraid of. People have always been supportive since I started, so take the opportunity!”
Mia Thompson, Production Operative
“I had limited opportunities in other sectors and GEM offered training. The training gave me an insight into manufacturing and allowed me to understand that anyone can do it. During my journey, I have moved departments and this has allowed me to develop my knowledge and have different experiences.
“Manufacturing is stereotypically a male dominated field. It can be daunting and scary for a women, but I was so surprised by the number of women who work at Husqvarna. It made me feel comfortable and supported. Having a wider diversity will improve productivity and also create a better culture.
“My advice for women considering a future in manufacturing would be; it might seem scary at first, but be brave, as you will be surprised.”
Women are vastly underrepresented within the manufacturing sector, but with the employment opportunities Husqvarna provide and the training GEM are able to deliver due to our NECA funding, it allows us to break down the barriers that may inhibit women within the sector and provide the platform for them to thrive.
