North East Mayor visit

We were delighted to recently host North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness and representatives from the North East Combined Authority in partnership with Husqvarna

The visit which was held in collaboration with Husqvarna in Newton Aycliffe, was a fantastic opportunity for us to demonstrate our partnership in action, with the focus being shone on the training and development pathways provided via the Level 2 Diploma in Manufacturing training course, which is funded by our NECA direct contract and the end result of those individuals who have completed the qualification, putting their new skills into practice in the workplace. This funding is being used to impact the lives of those within the community, offering opportunities for those who are seeking new work, have recently relocated, are looking to change sectors or have no experience within manufacturing.

The visit also offered the opportunity for us to cast the focus on some of the women within the manufacturing industry, on assignment at Husqvarna. Women are vastly underrepresented within the manufacturing sector, but with the employment opportunities Husqvarna provide and the training GEM are able to deliver due to our NECA funding, it allows us to break down the barriers that may inhibit women within the sector and provide the platform for them to thrive.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said:

“It was absolutely fantastic to meet the workers at Husqvarna, they are vital to making our region the exporting powerhouse it is.

“I particularly enjoyed seeing the skills training we’re funding in practice, meaning new starters and seasoned employees have the skills fit for the future.

“This is all part of our New Deal for North East Workers, which will support a generation of workers with the training they need for success.

“What that means is whether you’re on the very first steps of your career ladder, whether you’re climbing up it, or trying to change career we’re working to support you.”

During her visit, the Mayor talked about her New Deal for North East Workers which aims to further increase the skills of North East workers. She also discussed SHINE, the region’s new employer accreditation scheme that will celebrate our region’s best employers as well as helping employers of all sizes create more fulfilling, fair and sustainable workplaces.

This aligns perfectly with GEM’s values and ideology and we’re delighted to share that we’ve committed to sign up to the project and are excited to help support the growth of the North East.

Everyone at GEM would like to extend our thanks to Kim and the other delegates in attendance and Husqvarna for facilitating the visit.
