Apprentice Spotlight – August 2023

Future industry leaders

As a recruitment and training provider we’re in the fortunate position of being able to not only provide our partners with talent but also to help train and shape that talent into the future leaders of the industry.

Last month we spoke to two Manufacturing apprentices working toward their Level 2 in Lean Manufacturing (which you can read here: https://www.gempartnership.com/apprentice-spotlight-july-2023/)

This month we turn our attention to Kara Henshaw who is currently working toward her Level 3 Business Administrator apprenticeship with JC Atkinson.

How have you found you have developed during your apprenticeship so far?

Personally, I feel as though I have gained a great deal of knowledge whilst working at JC Atkinson as I have had the opportunity to cover numerous sectors of the organisation during the past few months e.g. departments such as Accounts and Health and Safety have offered crucial work that has improved my knowledge and understanding. As I reflect on my progress, I believe that my experience so far at JC Atkinson has truly allowed me to expand my abilities, enhance my skills and progress my knowledge in such a short period of time.

What benefits/improvements have you gained since starting your apprenticeship?

Since starting my apprenticeship, my knowledge has drastically improved as both in the organisation I work for and through my apprenticeship. Transparently, I feel as though I have learnt high levels of knowledge of business admin and used real life scenarios to tackle problems to deepen my understanding. Furthermore, I have gained knowledge on business admin by finding out more knowledge on the company I work for, such as its policies, processes and relevant regulations. Similarly, I was able to determine a personal understanding of the internal factors of the organisation and discuss them to hopefully be able to create improvements and future changes to benefit the organisation.

Finally, would you recommend an apprenticeship?

I must recommend completing a business admin apprenticeship as it has drastically improved my knowledge and understanding. Personally, I truly believe that my skills have thoroughly grown and also that I have had the opportunity to have a different perspective on an organisation as I have gained immense levels of intel and knowledge from working at JC Atkinson for the past several months.

We also spoke to Kara’s manager who had this to say:

Kara has gone from strength to strength while with the business and I forget sometimes she is only 17. Initially there was lots of admin / data input work for one department, Kara is now doing some fairly complex work for our supply chain, finance and H&S departments. I also like the fact Kara sees problems and suggests solutions, a rare trait I find.

Personally Kara has been fantastic support and I can speak for other people in the business who are fully in agreement. She is a huge asset for the business, and I can see her growing and taking on more responsibility day by day.

At GEM when we receive feedback like the above from Kara’s manager – it’s a very welcomed response regarding not only Kara but our training team too.

GEM Partnership provides apprenticeships across the manufacturing industry in the North of England supporting the upskill of workforce talent as part of succession planning, as well as the recruitment of apprentices.
